Tribute to Volunteers

Behind every chamber of commerce is a group of very dedicated volunteers. The Florissant Valley Chamber of Commerce is very fortunate to have a group of volunteers who give of their time and energy each time duty calls. These volunteers help make each meeting, event and programs possible.

Next week, April 11, the chamber will host our Annual Business Person of the Year and Installation Dinner. At this event we will honor chamber members who have volunteered and given exceptional effort in their chamber, business and civic activities.

Our 2008 Outstanding Business Person is JoAnn Donovan, Attorney at Law. For 25 years JoAnn Donovan has been building a successful law firm that serves the community with family law, wills & trusts, probate, business litigation and general civil litigation. Along with building her practice, JoAnn has taken an active role in the community. She is an active member of the Florissant Valley Chamber of Commerce, Florissant Rotary Club, Soroptimist Club, Florissant Ambassadors, North County Incorporated and Florissant Old Town Partners.

As part of the evening the chamber will be installing our 2008-2009 Board of Directors. These 15 business people have made great efforts in promoting both the chamber and the North County business community. The 2008-2009 Florissant Valley Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors are: Dan Boyle (Chairman), The Boyle Law Firm; Bonnie Barczykowski (Vice Chairwoman), Curves; Keith Took (Secretary), Old Town Donuts; Terrence Harris (Treasurer), National City; Dr. Chris Wright (Past Chairwoman), Hazelwood School District; Kim Bakker, SSM DePaul Health Center; Cathy Behlmann, M.J. Behlmann Construction; Bret Berigan, Christian Hospital; Mark Bretz, Bretz Public Relations; Bob Gianino, White Auto Body; Richard Henefer, Don Henefer Jewelers; Dave Otto, Handyman True Value Hardware; Steve Robbins, Steve Robbins, CFP, CSA; Calvin Wilson, Verizon Wireless; and Grace Zykan, Zykan Properties.

What makes an organization or a community flourish is the effort that is given from an active membership of dedicated volunteers. I hope that our membership and residential community will join the chamber on Friday, April 11 at Norwood Hills Country Club and honor these individuals who have dreamed about making things better and made the effort to make those dreams a reality.

The Chamber Has Value

What is a benefit? A benefit is a useful aid. It is something that can assist us in our everyday endeavors. The Florissant Valley Chamber of Commerce has many benefits to offer members and potential members. The Chamber offers affordable marketing opportunities, learning opportunities to build your business and programs to connect your business with the community. Each of the Chamber’s benefits has a value associated with it.

A value is what gives a benefit its worth. Four of the Chamber’s key benefits are the Chamber Business Directory, our business referral service, the Chamber Web site and our monthly luncheon meetings. These benefits offer many great values.

The Chamber Business Directory is an excellent promotional tool for local businesses. Each Chamber member is listed at no cost. The listing includes company name, contact, telephone, fax, Web site, etc… Members also have an opportunity to place advertisements at an affordable rate. The directories are distributed to each Chamber member and in high traffic locations for residents to pick up.

Each day the Chamber office receives phone calls from members, residents and potential visitors to our area about referrals for local businesses. The Chamber will only field these referrals with Chamber members. Referrals can add up to many sales throughout the year.

The Chamber Web site, www.florissantvalleycc.com, is an excellent forum to promote your business. Each Chamber member is listed on the Web site and links are provided to their companies Web site at no charge. Members can submit information to be featured on the Web site through the “Members in the News” section. The Web site also features the members through our “Member Focus” section, which allows members to tell others about their business and themselves.

Every third Wednesday of the month the Chamber hosts a monthly luncheon meeting. At these meetings members can network and meet one another. Presentations, community information and important issues facing our local businesses are featured at these meetings. The cost for these meetings is minimal and new members receive a free lunch when they join.

These four benefits combine to a $1,100 value. Considering that the average dues for a business are only $247, Chamber members receive an outstanding value for their dues.

If you would like more information about the Florissant Valley Chamber of Commerce or would like to join please contact our offices at 314-831-3500.

CHAMBER PROVIDES OPPORTUNITES FOR LOCAL STUDENTS

The Florissant Valley Chamber of Commerce has two exciting programs for local high school students. The Chamber will be hosting its 2nd Annual Job Shadow Day and award five $1,000 scholarships to local high school seniors to pursue further education.

On Friday, February 8, 2008 the Chamber will host its 2nd Annual Job Shadow for high school juniors and seniors from across the Florissant Valley area. The chamber will pair students with chamber businesses to give students an up-close look at the working world and to answer the question, “Why do I have to learn this?”

The student’s day will run from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. The students will be taken through a normal day on the job, go through resume preparation, be involved in meetings and learn workplace skills. Job shadowing inspires students to be enthusiastic about their studies by showing them the correlation between what they learn in school and how it is used in the workplace. Applications for this program will be accepted through December.

On March 19, 2008 the Chamber will award five local high school seniors with $1,000 scholarships. Over the past five years the Chamber has provided $15,000 in scholarships to help local students further their education.

The scholarship can be used for post high school continuing education expenses including college or university tuition, room and board, books, fees or for expenses associated with a trade or technical school program. Seniors with a commitment to North County, an interest in pursuing a career in business and have demonstrated a record of community service are encouraged to apply.

The scholarship fund was set up with donations from local chamber businesses and a fall bowling tournament. All proceeds raised from the bowling tournament go toward the scholarship fund.

The deadline for applications is Friday, February 22, 2008. Applications can be picked up at your local high school, by contacting the Chamber office at 314-831-3500 or online at www.florissantvalleycc.com

The Florissant Valley Chamber of Commerce is proud to be supporting the future leaders of our business community.

CHAMBER SPOTLIGHTS ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

The Florissant Valley Chamber of Commerce recently hosted a media reception to present the tremendous economic growth in the North County area. Highlighted at this reception were 27 new commercial developments totaling over $1,196,000,000 and 29 residential developments bringing 1,500 new homes into the area. Three of the exciting projects in development are the Splash Universe Hotel and Water Park, the Nature Lodge at Sunset Park and the improvements being made to Highway 367.

The Splash Universe Hotel and Water Park located at the St. Louis Mills Mall will be a great family friendly venue for the North County community. This 50 million dollar facility will feature a 130 room hotel, conference center, salon, day spa, indoor water park, ice cream parlor and restaurant.

The Nature Lodge at Sunset Park will be a year-round learning center for area students. The 2,500 square-foot lodge is being constructed near the park’s center on a scenic hilltop. It will be a place where schools, scouting troops and conservation groups can come and learn about the environment through programs and activities. The lodge will also be available for private rentals.

The second and third phases of the Highway 367 improvement project between New Jamestown Rd. and Coldwater Creek are underway and ahead of schedule. These phases will incorporate a new bridge that will carry New Jamestown Rd. over Highway 367, a U-turn ramp bridge to carry northbound Lusher Rd. traffic over Highway 367 to where southbound Benham Rd. begins and new retaining walls and pavement along the highway.

Florissant Valley is booming with growth and development. The Chamber is proud to be a partner with the business professionals and community leaders who are working to promote and grow the North County region. The Florissant Valley Chamber is working to build a strong community for future generations.

Educate Yourself at Monthly Chamber Meetings

Luncheon speakers in the past have included St. Louis County Executive Charles Dooley, U.S. Attorney Catherine Hanaway and St. Louis Cardinals President Mark Lamping.

The meeting will be held on Wednesday, October 17, 2007 at Garden Villas North, 4505 Parker Rd., from 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Our November meeting is a special meeting because we honor the Best of North County recipients. The Chamber has partnered with the North County Suburban Journals to recognize the businesses that our residents have chosen as being top notch in the area. Businesses are personally invited to attend and accept a special award that can be displayed proudly at their place of business. Each year this meeting is attended in great numbers as everyone celebrates the accomplishments of North County’s outstanding business owners. This year’s meeting will be held on Wednesday, November 21 at Catering to You Banquet Center, 12775 New Halls Ferry Rd., from 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. Winners for Best of North County will be selected in early November and notified to attend the meeting by the Chamber.

Chamber Ushers in Autumn

Autumn is coming and hopefully as the leaves fall so will the temperatures. Autumn is an excellent time to be outside and really enjoy what the Florissant Valley has to offer. Plan a family day at one of our many local parks, take a bike ride on the Great Rivers Greenway District connecting St. Louis County, attend one of our local community autumn festivals or carve a pumpkin. No matter what you decide to do remember to be safe and have fun while doing it. The Chamber has many activities planned for this autumn and the Chambers’ September issue of Our Town magazine features a special section devoted to autumn activities.

The Chamber will be hosting two upcoming events, our September Luncheon Meeting and our Casino Night. The September Luncheon Meeting speaker will be Catherine Hanaway, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Missouri. The luncheon will be held at Yacovelli’s Restaurant and Banquet Center on Wednesday, September 19 and starts at 11:30 a.m. Cost is $15 for members and $17 for non-members.

The Chambers’ “Cruising the Hawaiian Islands” Casino Night presented by SSM DePaul Health Center is an excellent opportunity for residents to learn how to play Black Jack, Poker, Roulette and Craps without losing all the money they might have at a casino. Casino Night will be held at Catering to You Banquet Center on Friday, September 21 and starts at 6:30 p.m. Cost is only $40 per person and includes a buffet dinner, drinks, gaming, auctions and prizes.

To make reservations for these exciting events please call the Florissant Valley Chamber office, 314-831-3500, or visit the Chamber web site, www.florissantvalleycc.com

The Chambers’ September Our Town magazine hits newsstands this week. Inside you will find a fun Autumn Recipe, the first part of our History Series and an Awesome Autumn Activities section. The activities section is quite extensive and features information on events taking place in the Florissant Valley and Missouri. Included is information on the Historic Reenactment at Sioux Passage featuring the Lewis and Clark time period, a Full Moon Paddle Bike Ride and Walk, the Kimmswick Apple Butter Festival, “Lighting of the Great Pumpkin Mountain” in St. Joseph and the “Swingin’ in the Vines” Harvest Festival in Augusta. We recommend that you get out and explore!

We would not be able to provide this magazine to you without the support of our advertisers, so please support them and all the members of your Florissant Valley Chamber of Commerce throughout the year.
